Oscar I is created by Mark Mann and is part of his Oscar: Step into the Wild series. This fabulous limited edition giclée prints is finished with screen printed foil details, and developed from hand-painted designs.
Mark Mann creates statement ceramics, prints, wall coverings and upholstery fabrics which fuse art, craftsmanship and luxury to create interiors which tell stories. Mark’s Oscar series is inspired by the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century, and Oscar Wilde in particular. This series combines seductive moths and enlarged floral motifs to create vibrant and immersive statement pieces.
Wilde had flirted with danger at the opening night of his play Lady Windermeres’ Fan, at which he encouraged a number of friends to sport a green carnation as buttonholes. When asked what they meant, Wilde was said to have replied “Nothing whatsoever, but that is just what nobody will guess”.
Penniless and with his reputation ruined, Wilde died in a Paris hotel in 1900. As he was reflecting on the dowdy wallpaper in the room, his last words were said to be, “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go.”
