This Hadrian Plate is a hand-made glazed earthenware piece by Mark Mann finished with shimmering gold accents.
Inspired by the story of Emperor Hadrian and his love for the beautiful youth Antinous. Hadrian is said to have been devastated by his lovers death and such was his devotion that he dedicated a cult to Antinious’ worship, founded a city in his name and commissioned sculptures to be made throughout his empire.
Using the seductive qualities of ceramics, bronze and textiles, Mark Mann’s work is a commentary on society, its injustices and its pleasures. His works explores historical themes such as Ancient Greek aesthetics with contemporary relevance and often uses coded imagery to convey queer meaning.
