This White Crackle Raku Pot by Jennie Durant has been created using the naked raku firing technique. This technique involves applying a very thick slip to the surface of a pot. When the slip dries, it shrinks and cracks while it is fired in the kiln.
The pot is then placed in to a metal can, which usually contains sawdust. This can is then infused with smoke, which seeps through the cracked slip and marks the pot beneath. Once the piece is removed from the can the slip falls away to reveal the beautiful black crackle pattern which is the signature style of naked raku firing.
